Thank you for agreeing to participate in this year’s academy. The Commission on Evangelism takes serious the mission statement of The United Methodist Church, “to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” The Academy of Christian Witness’ mission is to assist laity in fulfilling the mission statement of the Church. You will leave with tools in your toolbox, a book in your backpack, and other people to help you on the journey.
The Academy is built on premise of Foundation, Function and Follow-through. We offer worship and presentations to prepare you to return to your church with tools to bring men, women and children to Christ. Attached you will find a schedule for the Academy, please take time to review it prior to your arrival. I may have one workshop that may move due to people’s schedules, so you will receive the final copy on Thursday when you arrive. We will be meeting at Camp Rockfish near Parkton, NC. Here is the camp’s website to get directions to it (http://www.camprockfish.org/). There is a small amount of walking. However, you can feel free to drive between buildings if that is more comfortable for you.
We will be residing in the Bergland Center at Camp Rockfish and having our worship and teaching sessions there. All participants will be paired in rooms at the Bergland Center. All your linens are provided. There is one meal on Thursday, three meals on Friday and breakfast on Saturday and plenty of snacks. Please let me know if you have special dietary needs such as vegetarian meals. You are welcome to dress casually and comfortably throughout the weekend.
The conference room has wireless internet capacity, however the rooms do not.
The Annual Conference and the Conference Connectional Table strongly support this Academy and believe it’s benefit to the laity is to fulfill the previously mentioned mission statement. As such, we ask that you make arrangements to be at the Academy throughout the three days. We understand that emergencies arise. However, given the stewardship responsibilities the Commission has the Annual Conference, we ask that you commit to full participation in the 48 hours. Please plan to arrive between 2 and 3pm on Thursday. We will be done before noon on Saturday.
Have you ever noticed that the Bible is full of stories? Noah and the Ark…The Tower of Babel….Jesus and the blind man…. Why is the Bible full of stories? Let’s be real. Stories are easier to remember than a list. Stories draw us into the action. We can see ourselves in the stories.
Our faith journey is also a story, a story where we move closer to God and sometimes further away. Our stories are important to share. Our story may be the voice that God uses to speak to someone else.
